THE HUMMING OF MY BLOOD (NWF Reading)
2 September 2024 8:15PM Old Fitz, 129 Dowling St, NSW, Australia.Fourteen-year-old Luis has never been able to put into words even half the things inside his head. Now he is about to go to school for the first time in his life. When he meets other children who have been bottled up just like him, something remarkable begins to happen. Ann, a young linguistic researcher on a field work assignment, takes notice. But while she is swept up by the thrill of academic discovery, Luis remains a boy, just aching to be understood.
This is Nicaragua, 1984. The country has been through a violent revolution and is still dealing with the aftermath. Somehow, amidst the turmoil, deaf children come together in a quiet feat of ingenuity, giving us an unprecedented window into the human mind. Based on true events, this play invites audiences to consider how we are all driven to communicate, to connect. As Luis unlocks his story, will those whose lives he touches also unlock theirs?
